Census road show will stop here Sunday
EAST WENATCHEE — The 2010 Census Portrait of America Road Tour will roll into East Wenatchee on Sunday. The tour, organized by the U.S. Census Bureau, is traveling the country to tout the importance of filling out and mailing back the national census form.
Woman charged with rape of teen
WENATCHEE — A 22-year-old Wenatchee woman has been charged with rape after a boy told police he started having sex with the woman when he was 14. Bridget D. Scharpp was charged Tuesday in Chelan County Superior Court with two counts of third-degree rape of a child, a felony.
Controlled fires burning south of Wenatchee
WENATCHEE — Several small fires burning on the hillside south of Wenatchee are prescribed burns on private property. Several fire trucks were called out to the area off Chapman Road Friday afternoon after numerous people called RiverCom to report the fires, which were visible from Wenatchee and East Wenatchee.
Three arrests in Grant County murder
EPHRATA — Two adults and a juvenile have been arrested for the March 7 murder of a Mattawa teenager. Martin Ochoa Ramos, 41, of Sunnyside, was arrested Thursday afternoon in Sunnyside on a Grant County Superior Court warrant for first-degree murder, accomplice.
Omak spellers bring A-game to bee
EAST WENATCHEE — If you want to be NCW’s spelling champ, this may be the key word:O-m-a-k. For the fourth year in a row, a student from Omak has won the North Central Washington Spelling Bee and will go on to compete nationally.
Charges filed over explosive device
WENATCHEE — Charges have been filed against a 23-year-old Leavenworth man after a homemade explosive device was found under Chelan County Fire District 3 Chief Kelly O’Brien’s truck. Robert C. Allen was charged Monday in Chelan County Superior Court with possession of a bomb or explosive device with intent to use it for unlawful purposes and unlawful possession of methamphetamine.
Two charged in Baskin-Robbins robbery
WENATCHEE — An East Wenatchee man and a Leavenworth woman have been charged in the reported robbery of the Baskin-Robbins store early last year. Kyle D. Tamayo, 23, was charged March 2 in Superior Court with attempted second-degree robbery for the Jan. 11, 2009, robbery of the ice cream store. He was also charged with second-degree theft in connection with a Jan. 27 theft at J.C. Penney and conspiracy to unlawful possession of OxyContin.
Fire snarls traffic near Sellar Bridge
Two blazes keep firefighters busy; no injuries reported
WENATCHEE — Fire heavily damaged a large storage building Thursday afternoon, sending up huge plumes of black smoke and snarling traffic near the Sen. George Sellar Bridge. Firefighters were called to the fire in the 1200 block of South Mission Street around 4:20 p.m. Smoke from the fire could be seen throughout the valley.
January deer killings bring poaching charges for 3 men
WENATCHEE — Three men have been charged with illegally killing four deer south of Cashmere in late January, including a Western Washington man who was going through the process of becoming a state-certified master hunter. The men are accused of killing the deer in Fairview Canyon, a wintering ground for mule deer. Hunting season for the deer ended in September.
Normally dry region enjoying snowy winter
OMAK — While much of the state may be facing shortages of water this summer, an area of Okanogan County will be soaking it all up. Two water basins to the east and west of Omak in the rural, normally parched county are experiencing one of their wettest winters ever. Strangely enough, the Conconully and Omak creek basins are typically among the driest in the state.
