WVC faculty votes down furloughs

WENATCHEE — By a two-vote margin, the faculty union rejected a request from Wenatchee Valley College to give up two paid days to help balance the next year’s budget. Announced Thursday morning, the count showed 28 faculty opposed the furloughs and 26 voted in favor of them. Another 20 didn’t vote.

WVC has a new plan to lure more renters

WENATCHEE — Administrators outlined a plan Wednesday that would entice more students to rent dorm rooms with new payment plans, fewer fees, better living conditions and more food options. The plan does not address how the new student housing building will break even in the future, or how the college will make up for its predicted $200,000 losses this year.

17 NCW schools honored for achievement

OLYMPIA — The State Board of Education awarded 17 North Central Washington schools for academic achievement on Wednesday. More than 170 schools statewide received Washington Achievement Awards in four categories: overall excellence, language arts, math and science.

Humane Society issues fraud warning

WENATCHEE — The Wenatchee Valley Humane Society warned local pet owners Wednesday of a new scam involving pet identification microchips. Someone claiming to be “24 Hour Pet Watch” sent letters and called pet owners asking them to update their pet’s microchip for $12.95 a year. The scam directed people to mail the money to a post office box in Buffalo, N.Y., said Humane Society Director Stephanie Manriquez.

Activist urges Latinos to answer census

WENATCHEE — It’s going to take a lot more than a letter to convince the historically hard-to-count Latino community to answer the 10 census questions arriving in the mail this week. So the census bureau brought in a short, 79-year-old woman in a black beret — Dolores Huerta.

Wenatchee World: Looking back at your life in organizing, you’ve been behind of a lot of reform laws and protests. What are you most proud of? Dolores Huerta: I guess my kids, truth be told (laughs). I’m proud of the fact we organized a farmworkers union for the first time in the history of the United States of America. We were able to get toilets and drinking water in the fields for farmworkers and unemployment insurance, you know. Also the legalization bill of 1986, where we had 1.4 million farmworkers get their amnesty. That made a big difference in people’s lives.

College asks faculty to accept furloughs

WENATCHEE — Wenatchee Valley College is asking its faculty union to give up two paid days to help balance the budget for next school year. The vote is Wednesday. The college is preparing to lose $400,000 to $900,000 in state funding next year. A faculty furlough would save $56,000.

Superintendent interviews next week

LEAVENWORTH — The Cascade School Board narrowed its superintendent search to four hopefuls, whom the public can meet at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at the district office. The board will interview two candidates a day. The school board will meet today to decide which applicants will be invited to interviews next week, said Julie Winters, executive secretary to the board and superintendent.

EAST WENATCHEE — The school remodel bond Eastmont put on hold two years ago is now back on the table. The school board agreed Monday night to go forward with a $51 million tax measure that would pay for repairs and renovations, mainly at Eastmont High School, Sterling Intermediate and Grant Elementary.

More green, less garbage at Eastmont

EAST WENATCHEE — Eastmont junior Karissa Sanchez was more than happy to dive into a Dumpster Wednesday. She spotted a plastic bottle in a recycle bin for mixed paper and jumped in to grab it. In the bins next to her, students dumped 32-gallon garbage cans full of paper they collected from classrooms and halls at Eastmont High School.
