Worm: Mazama family biking along the Continental Divide
That crazy guy and his family are at it again. Methow Valley residents Rob Seckinger, Ina Clark and their two kids, Maya, 13, and Wiley, 11, took off this week on another epic bicycle journey. Seckinger — he’s the self-described crazy guy — and his family flew to El Paso, Texas, where they rented a truck to get their bikes to Antelope Wells, N.M. for the start of their trip May 11. They plan to ride — each on their own mountain bike — north along the Continental Divide to Banff, Alberta. They didn’t get off to a great start, Seckinger wrote on his blog. One of the bikes — disassembled in a box — fell off a tractor-pulled baggage cart and was damaged. He was able to repair it but wondered if it was going to be more prone to problems on the trip. Adventure is nothing new for the family. In 2009, they rode tandem bikes — Ina and Maya on one, Rob and Wiley on the other — from Washington, D.C., back home to Mazama. The family rode and camped across 11 states on their 3,333-mile, two-month trip. Seckinger said that trip forged a sense of team effort and deep appreciation between family members. Friends followed that trip on their blog site crazyguyonabike.com. You can follow them on this trip at familydivideride.weebly.com.
Father and son team up to get degree, and help others
SPOKANE — When Ryan Sutherland wanted to go to college three years ago, his father, Steve, went with him. Not just for a visit, but to stay. The father and son, from Cashmere, have been dorm roommates at Whitworth University in Spokane since Ryan started there in 2009. Ryan graduated with a bachelor’s degree in psychology May 13. That’s no minor accomplishment for the young man with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a disease that normally cuts down its victims by his age of 22. Ryan is a quadriplegic, with very limited use of only his right hand.
