You were right in closing the wrestling thread. I questioned something religious to them (wrestling) and they in turn cast doubts on my faith. I wish you had stopped it about twenty posts back before I got so defencive and said things I now regret.

Is a discussion about whether or not illegal immigrants are damaging the economy a discussion that's not worth having?

How is the fact that discussions - whether in person or in an internet forum - evolve a bad thing?

Part of the reason conversations evolve is that people who have something to say about the original topic have already said what they had to say about it, but that doesn't mean that anybody else (or the original participants in the conversation) is foreclosed from jumping in at a later point and addressing an earlier post that was more closely related to the original topic. Unless of course, the thread gets closed.

There are some perfectly valid reasons for closing a thread - if it devolves into a shouting match, for instance. But I really don't see why wondering away from the starting point of a conversation calls for arbitrarily ending that conversation.

You didn't really miss my point there, did you? At least 90% of Art's posts are little more than variations on the theme "liberals are dumb". But those threads never get shut down for violating the clearly justified rule prohibiting insults and name-calling. Now, there are plenty of regular posters here who share his sentiments but address their arguments to the policies they oppose rather than to the people who prefer those policies.

And I'll add that as a frequent target of his insults, I much prefer that he be allowed to continue making them and that they not be deleted or closed. My point was just to illustrate what appears to me to be an inconsistent application of the rules.
