Lindsay Lohan gets 90 days for violating her probation (which she was on basically for partying too much) yet a child abuser gets 20 days. Awesome how well our system works, isn't it?
Better late than never, I suppose, and I'm pleasantly surprised to see this appear in the Wenatchee World. I'm a daily reader of Hemant's blog, and I can say how great it was to find like-minded people, whether local or global.
I'm a parent of 1 WHS graduate and 1 WHS junior and both have complained that most days there isn't enough time to get through the lunch lines. They rely on the break for time to grab something to eat or they have to wait until after school at 3:00 for their first meal. (I try to get them to eat before school but they both say it makes them feel sick to eat so early in the morning.) I work with moms of other WHS teens and they have all said the same thing. I honestly thought the lunch was going to be lengthened a bit to address this so am pretty shocked it's being shortened instead. I can understand the school wanting to do something to help failing students, but I don't think it's necessary to make all freshman attend. Their attendance should be based on the same guidelines as the other grades. A good source of time would be to get rid of the ridiculous "late start" Monday and spread out that 1.5 hours each week into the schedule to accommodate morning break, a reasonable-length lunch, appropriate-length classes and PAWS. I know some will say late start is indispensable, but most other US school districts don't use it and yet somehow most of us managed to graduate and become job-holding, contributing members of society. I'm pretty sure that time on Monday morning could be put to better use throughout the week.
I am also appalled this wasn't big on the front page. In fact, there was NOTHING about it on the front page when I just came looking for any updates. I had to search her name in the search box which amazingly enough only brought up her name on the HS good grades list. Had to hunt around the WW site until I saw a link to it off the side under "Popular Stories". Surely this community isn't so big and impersonal that a missing child under these cicumstances shouldn't be EVERYONE'S concern. I feel sick for this girl and her family.
Ha, we were in the same spot at almost the same day (me 10/10) and my view is the exact opposite of yours. Here is mine looking at the gate but OUT of the park. http://www.flickr.com/photos/tonyadou...

No one has words that can express how awful this is, how badly we feel for these families. Please know that this community has you in our thoughts.
