Well, as hoped for and promised, the weather held and we made it out to Yakima on Thursday night the 26th for the Opening /Reception for all the artists who donated art for the “Partnership for Art” project.

The event was held at the Peggy Lewis Gallery of Allied Arts of Yakima. The project was the culmination of efforts by the YWCA, Allied Arts and the Junior League of Yakima and the donated time and effort and material by the Yakima Bindery for framing the artwork. The show will be running through February 3, 2012 after which time the artwork will be installed at the YWCA Women’s Shelter. The whole idea was that at the shelter which has a new wing and reportedly looks great was missing just one thing… some inspiring artwork. And, so Erin Black and the other folks at the YWCA, Allied Arts and the Junior League hatched a wonderful idea to invite artists to create art specifically for the shelter and or donate existing work that would offer inspiration and hope for the women and children staying at the shelter. What a great idea and what a great cause to have a show and event for. The reception was well attended, and it was a joy to meet some of the other artists, like Gary Miller who takes some of the most beautiful and inspiring photos and who’s “Cousins” hit the mark spot on for the theme of the show, Nia Brown who is a well known graphic artist with quite a list of credits to her name and Evalyn Suarez who paints digitally and who explained a thing or two of the creative use of Photoshop for this old photo geek, and, of course Wenatchee’s own Martha Flores was there as well. I’m told that the Yakima Herald used a photo of Martha’s “Flowering Consciousness” for an online edition of the paper earlier in the week.

All in all it was a great event for a great cause and was well attended by artists, art lovers and the community minded people of Yakima and thereabouts. Thanks again to Samantha Martinez for putting together a great event. Everyone who loves art and has a heart for kids and families in need should get out to the Peggy Lewis Gallery to catch the show while it’s there.

Anyone attending from Wenatchee should head out there prior to the third so as not to miss First Friday in Wenatchee where one can see this intriguing piece by John Barret and work by forety artists including featured artist Martha Flores.
