GIRLS (11-1, 16-4) District play opens tomorrow with Wenatchee facing Eisenhower (6-8, 9-11) in the WHS gym. The home team enters as the number one seed from the Columbia Division of the CBBN league, while the visitors come in as the number four seed from the Cascade Division. This will be the second time these two teams have faced each other this season. In their second game of the current campaign the Panthers traveled to Yakima where they defeated the Cadets 46-37 December 2 in a non-league encounter. The victory was the sixth straight for WHS over EHS. A win Saturday and Wenatchee will tie the school record of consecutive wins over Eisenhower. They took seven in row from 1981-82 to 1984-85.
Since the two Central Washington foes first met in 1975-76, they have played 69 times and the local ladies lead the series 38-31 and are 22-13 at home. With a win tomorrow, Coach Ron Stone can even his mark with the Cadets at 10-10.
Girls move up. Wenatchee is 11th in the state this week in the AP’s ranking of 4A teams. As they did last week, they got two votes, but this time around it was enough to move them from 13th a week ago to just outside the top 10. Other teams ranked that are striving to make the Eastern Regional are Chiawana 6th, Central Valley 8th and Richland, Mead and Gonzaga Prep all tied for 12th.
BOYS (7-5, 7-13)
The boys open district action at Richland (11-3, 17-3) the number two finisher in the Cascade Division and that division’s number two seed. Wenatchee finished fourth in the Columbia Division but is the number three seed in district play as Sunnyside who finished ahead of them is a 3A school and will compete in a 3A district tourney.
December 5 WHS ventured to the Tri-Cities for a non-league game and got dropped by the Bombers 73-42, Richland’s fourth consecutive victory over Wenatchee. Since 1951-52 the Panthers and Bombers have competed 100 times with the Purple & Gold coming out on the short end 80-20. And they have not faired well at Richland, losing 46 of 51 games. Coach Brett McGinnis has managed 4 wins in 14 games.
