A follow-up on Panther hoop opponents and CBBN members playing in state tournaments.

Boys Two teams from the Columbia Basin Big Nine Conference qualified for the 4A state tourney, Walla Walla and Davis. Davis opened with Decatur of Federal Way and lost 50-47 and then was eliminated by Skyline of Sammamish 55-44. Wenatchee lost twice to Davis this season.

The Blue Devils began with a 55-49 victory over Lincoln of Tacoma and then met another City of Destiny squad and lost to Wilson 52-44. Walla Walla rebounded with a 67-49 pounding of Eastlake of Sammamish and that win put them in the trophy round Saturday vying with Decatur for fourth and seventh places. The CBBN member came through with a 48-38 win and the fourth place hardware. WHS and WWHS were in opposite divisions of the league this year and never faced each other.

At the end of December the Panthers hosted Auburn and were defeated by the Trojans. Auburn made it to the state showdown in Tacoma and was eliminated in two games by Gonzaga Prep and Stanwood.

Wenatchee’s season opening opponent also made it to state, but not our state. Lake City of Coeur d’Alene qualified for the 8-team Gem State tournament and was defeated in two straight.

Girls Two teams from the local league earned state berths and both won trophies, Chiawana and Moses Lake. Chiawana opened with Federal Way and beat the Eagles 43-40. Next up was Auburn Riverside. The Ravens of Auburn stopped the Riverhawks 57-45 and went on to become the 4A state champions. Chiawana moved on to defeat Lake Stevens 52-44 and set themselves up for the 4th/7th game against Bellarmine Prep of Tacoma. This time the Riverhawks lost 61-57 to the Lions and got 7th place.

Moses Lake began the tournament with Bellarmine Prep and didn’t fare any better than Chiawana, losing 65-55. The Chiefs then got on pace and took two straight. First they bopped Marysville-Pilchuck 71-52 and the followed with a 49-34 triumph of Newport of Bellevue. In the trophy battle Saturday the Chiefs lost to Edmonds-Woodway 44-38 and took 8th place. Twice the Panthers played Moses Lake this season and both times resulted in WHS wins.

And the local gals did face a state champion…the one from our neighboring state to the East. January 2 Wenatchee traveled to Coeur d’Alene and was easily handled by the Vikings 76-48. The Idaho powerhouse went on to capture the 5A state title. And powerhouse is the word. This is their third straight state championship, and in the two years prior they finished number two.
