VOLLEYBALL (9-3, 17-8)
District competition begins Thursday and by Saturday three teams will have earned their way to the regionals. The first day the Panthers (third seed) host Moses Lake (sixth seed), while Walla Walla (fourth seed) hosts Eisenhower (fifth seed) in single elimination matches. The two winners join Richland (first seed) and Chiawana (second seed) in Richland Saturday to determine which three advance to Spokane the following weekend.
The Panthers twice swept the Chiefs 3-0 this fall and have a six-match win streak in the series. A year ago the two schools met twice in the district tourney and once at the regional affair and WHS took them all. Overall since 1980 it’s been a Purple & Gold show – the local squad has won 45 of 48 matches.
Since 1980 Wenatchee has played in 72 district matches – 36 wins, 36 losses.
The local conference didn’t do too shabby in the Volleyball Coaches Association poll this week...Richland is fifth, Chiawana eighth and our local heroines 10th.
Final League Standings: Richland 11-1, Chiawana 10-2, Wenatchee 9-3, Walla Walla 6-6, Moses Lake 3-9, Eisenhower 3-9, Davis 0-12. This was the second title in a row for the Bombers. This fall WHS was third with a 9-3 record. With the same mark a year ago they were second.
GIRLS SOCCER (5-7, 5-10-1)
The Panthers finished the league season 5-7 and in fourth place…the same record and place as a year ago. Last fall they tied with Moses for fourth place, but the Chiefs advance to district based in a tie-breaker system. This year the top six teams move on to district.
So, next up is district where the third through sixth place teams compete for one spot to regionals. The Panthers host fifth place Chiawana Saturday in a loser-out game. Walla Walla (sixth seed) is at Davis (three seed). The winners meet Tuesday for the third regional spot. In the meantime Richland and Moses Lake play Saturday with the winner advancing as number one and the loser as number two.
This season Wenatchee dropped Chiawana twice, 2-1 at home and 1-0 on the road. Overall the Riverhawks lead the series 3-2.
Wenatchee’s record in district play isn’t exactly stellar. In 16 previous district matches they have managed but two victories. They currently have a three-game losing streak, the last win coming in 2006 over Moses Lake.
Dead even. Twenty-six years after Wenatchee started their soccer program their league record is 130 wins, 130 losses and four ties.
Final League Standings: Richland 11-1, Moses Lake 9-3, Davis 8-4, Wenatchee 5-7, Chiawana 4-8, Walla Walla 4-8, Eisenhower 1-11. This is the third straight season Richland has won the league title, the sixth time in seven years and the eighth time in the last decade.
FOOTBALL (3-2, 5-3)
Friday, Chiawana (5-0, 7-0) away.
This is just the second game between the Panthers and Riverhawks. Last fall Chiawana initiated the series with a 28-0 win in the Apple Bowl in Wenatchee’s final league game.
A year ago in just their second year of existence the Pasco school won the league title and they’ve clinched at least a tie for the championship this year.
A Wenatchee win Friday and they and advance to the playoffs (three teams qualify). A loss and they will be 3-3 and most likely finish in a three-way tie for third with Davis and Richland. If that happens a mini-playoff will be held Tuesday to determine who moves on for further playoff action. Davis has finished their league schedule and is 3-3. Richland is 3-2 and hosts 1-4 Moses Lake.
This game will be the 80th for Scott Devereaux in eight seasons as head coach. His record is 49-30.
League Standings: Chiawana 5-0, 7-0; Eisenhower 4-1, 7-1; Wenatchee 3-2, 5-3; Davis 3-3, 5-3; Richland 2-3, 5-3; Moses Lake 1-4, 1-7,. Walla Walla 0-5, 0-7
