BOYS BASKETBALL (1-1, 5-5)
Saturday, Walla Walla (0-2, 3-6) away.
Wenatchee ended the year with a two-game win streak and now takes their show on the road to resume league play. And the league opponent the furthest away is up for Saturday. The Blue Devils have dropped CBBN contests to Richland and Moses Lake, and have a tough one Friday at Davis. WHS has lost to Walla Walla the last three times they’ve played, and trail the Blue Devils 72-56 overall.
Stone at 250. The team finished December with a win over Auburn. For Ron Stone that was his 250th game as a coach – 219 for the girls and 31 for the boys. The only Panther hoop coach with more is Eli Juarez with 312 in 14 seasons guiding the boys from 1990 to 2003.
GIRLS BASKETBALL (2-0, 6-4)
Saturday, Walla Walla (2-0, 7-3) home.
The Panthers and Blue Devils begin the week tied for the top spot in the league, both with 2-0 records. Walla Walla hosts Davis (1-0) Friday before coming here the next night. A year ago WHS swept the two league games from WWHS, but fell in the district tournament thus ending their season. Through the years the Blue Devils have won two-thirds of the games with the Panthers and lead the series 52-26. That may not look so good, but at one time the Southeast Washington outfit was up 31-5. Beginning in 1990-91 the Purple & Gold stopped the bleeding and over the past two decades the two teams have split 21-21. At home Wenatchee trails by one game 20-19.
A couple of weeks ago I mentioned the girls overall record since the program started in the fall of 1973. It is now 402-427. Someone remembered they won many games early and wondered when the losses overtook the wins. It happened in 1992-93 season. The team maintained a winning mark through the last game of 1992, went to 203-203 in the first game of 1993, lost the next one and has been “under water” since.
Polls
For the boys Davis is now No. 2 in the Tacoma News Tribune and No. 3 in the Seattle Times. The former top-ranked Pirates lost two games recently, to 3A Kamiakin and to Post Falls, ID. No other CBBN boy’s or girl’s teams are in the top 10 of either paper. Following their first 10 for the girls the TNT lists 17 schools as “Next” and that list includes Wenatchee, Walla Walla and Chiawana.
