Boats out of place: Desert Aire

Blog: Culture Check

Vessels: Six metal lifeboats, each measuring about 18- to 20-feet in length, now converted to picnic shelters. Reportedly, the boats were used on an ocean steamer before their transformation into land-based dining facilities. Location: A lush, community park at Desert Aire, a bustling development about 75 miles south of Wenatchee near Mattawa on the Columbia River. Site description: The fleet of shelter-boats "floats" at the center of this beautiful park. Each boat has two tables and benches to accommodate quite a few diners. The hulls have been painted bright colors. Canopies have been added. Distance to water: A community swimming pool sits just 100 yards away, and the Columbia River a few hundred yards beyond that.

How interesting! It is amazing how "context" shapes our experiences. I can imagine adults having just as much fun climbing aboard as kids- as the vessels transport an ordinary picnic lunch to exotic places. For just a moment, I glimpse the world through the lens of Cervantes. If I squint, I think I can see windmills faint against the blue horizon.
Lifeboats.
Remind us of the importance of joy on our journey.
