Cross-river conveyor?
Blog: Culture Check
March 8, 2010
A tall tower stands at the end of Columbia Siding Road on the east bank of the river. We're talking really tall -- can't reach it with a 10-foot ladder -- and topped by a fairly large housing or structure. A cable stretches from this housing to a point across the river.

I'm guessing this is some sort of machine to transport cargo from bank to bank. Or a pumping station? Electrical box? But maybe I'm wrong on all counts. What's this structure called? And what was it used for?

Cross-river conveyor?
There is a gondola inside the shack on top that rides on the cable to take people or material across the river.

A gondola? I agree with Nicole ... yikes! Do you think it's still in operation? Or is this something that quit operating years ago? Was this constructed so ranchers or orchardists could get to cattle or crops on the other side? Certainly not a public conveyance, I would guess.

If the gondola is still in operation - I would love to ride across the river. Matt is it private property? If no do you know what entity "owns" it? Thanks, I have also always wondered what it was too.
