Winter ahs beat summer blahs
Blog: Give It a Spin
November 30, 2009
Brrr, it's getting kind of cold outside. Though still comfortable for a walk around the block without getting bundled up in a scarf, cap and gloves, we're nearing that time when people start pining for warmer days. It seems to be an interesting theme in music and poetry as well. Winter is pitted as the time when all good things are memories. If you want a happy winter song, better break out those Christmas albums, because "Winter Wonderland" is pretty much all you'll find.
Makes me wonder why people seem to romanticize summer. I mean, if you think about it, cuddling up under a blanket with hot chocolate and a movie is just as romantic as a picnic in the park. Even more so, considering you don't have to worry about things like bugs, wind, noisy children and the sweltering sunshine on the comfort of your couch in December. But summer is supposedly the season when things happen. Couples have a lovely summer together, but once summer ends, the passion bubble pops, and life is once again dull and lonely. How do I know this? Because, Led Zeppelin sings of a summer's day slipping away to gray in "Tangerine," Dean Martin is remembering "The Things We Did Last Summer" all winter long, as "the leaves begin to fade like promises we made," and Frank Sinatra loses his love to the "Summer Wind."
Did you also know that, at least over one summer, New Kids on the Block had a bunch of hits, Chinese food made some guy sick, and girls dressed like Abercrombie models to attract unseeming douchebags? It's true. Listen to LFO's "Summer Girls" (or don't, actually, I suggest don't). I don't know what summer it was when "Billy Shakespeare wrote a whole bunch of sonnets," but according to the pop trio, that happened, too.
You can also watch John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John dish about their fling in "Grease" during "Summer Nights." They both still want to be together, but can't because — that's right, you got it — summer's over, bub. Time to get angsty.
While a little more understandable for a set of teenagers who have a summer break from responsibility, the seasonal lament is still giving winter a bad name. Everyone should consider taking a cue from generations of singers and "just listen to that fireplace roar," because, "Baby, It's Cold Outside," and don't forget that the heat wasn't any more welcoming. Magic can happen in winter, too. In fact, it's probably more likely that it will.

Agreed. Besides, you ever try to take a sleigh ride in July?

Nice one, Abby. This was very entertaining and I really enjoyed reading it. And, being me, I like the way you can write good sentences and get all the punctuation in the right places!

Sorry, you-who-emailed-me! She writes good sentences AND she writes sentences well. Either is correct, but thanks for the note. It's helpful when people note and comment.

Interesting article, Abby. You're fun to read. Have you heard the new Andrea Boccelli album for Christmas? It may not even be new, but it's new to me. It might not be your type; I doubt it's Rochelle's, but I liked it so much that I bought one for home and one for school. Joanne, some people should know that you never correct an English teacher, right? Even Spanish teachers usually know what they're doing. LOL

When the last snow was gone in June and the flies got thick I couldn't wait for the next snowfall to happen, counted the days once I saw it on the mountains and already have 5' and Thanksgiving just passed. Life is good and it's better to make your own music, dance to your own drum and enjoy every beautiful white moment. Now if it would just last 5 months longer, get some good reggae if you can't make your own music but you never are alone.

Susan: Bocelli, YES. I have every CD I know of that he has sold here. I don't care for some of the arrangements of Christmas music on this album, but I play it every night when I go to bed. It's relaxing. English teachers make mistakes, too. I have to reread carefully before I post in order to catch typos. And sometimes we dangle our participles and misplace our modifiers, but that's why we "Preview comment." Don't we all preview before we post? : ) Previewing also helps us think about an unkind or sarcastic remark we're about to make, so we can remove it.

Thanks everyone, I'm glad you like the blog!
It's been so long since I've purchased a new Christmas album. I usually just break out the old favorites, but two endorsements say I might have to check out the Bocelli one. I will, however, give my Vince Guaraldi the regular rounds, as well. :)

Ha! When I hit the part about the "unseeming douchebag" I didn't know whether to bite my teeth or go blind! I guess I'm a man for all seasons in that I don't play favorites because they each have something special and unique to offer that you won't find in the other three. As for romance, it's only seasonal if you're not human. :-P

You could say I play favorites (autumn, for me), but it does tend to change with my age (used to be summer, and, before that, spring) and my mood (pretty happy lately, so I'm associating winter with happy feelings), but I understand what you mean. Every season has something good to offer, so it's best we all indulge in that goodness while it lasts, because we'll have to wait almost a year to get it again. :)

I think the summer romance fantasy stems from school days when the stress of school and exams are finally off, and students just want to relax. They wear less clothes and just feel freer. But if summer or winter doesn't get you a love interest, don't forget Valentine's day isn't too far away, and maybe love will get you then.

Abby, I agree. Winter, though, has ceased to be popular with me because I can't garden or get outside as easily as I used to. In general, Mav, my favorite season is the one just coming up. I love them all. We all have the choice to look for the good or to look for the bad in everything. I try for the good.

I like fall a lot with the changing of the leaves and new hope for my new classes, and winter next, I think. Of course, spring means flowers and Apple Blossom and summer means that school's out, so they all have their own merit.

Okay, an Indian Summer in mid-September has to be my favorite. It's a great time to take some time and hike the local trails and it usually comes right before the apple harvest commitments that seems to disrupt the continuity of my fall. However, life is all good and every day is a gift that often holds a surprise inside. :-D

i love the winter the cold is beautiful and the dark hours extended is good to my irish skin the summer leaves me scolded i have had severe burns from the sun leaving me with black and blue blisters i think the sun is more harmful than it is good... i like to walk alot its one of my favorite things to do. it is a meditaion as well as an excercise i can walk from one side of this town to the other in little over an hour and no matter how cold it is if you walk fast you will warm up in about fifteen minutes to comfort... the cold is better for a work out as well because my body temperature stays lower so i can work it harder with out stressing out too much. hugs2abbytron and all of you vigilant hard working americans at The Wenatchee World i salute you!!
