Blog: Give It a Spin

This weekend, my list of 21 timeless love songs is being published in Thrive!, a quarterly tab in The Wenatchee World. They are songs for true love that is deep and everlasting.

However, for my blog, I present an alternate list of songs, ones for a love that is deeper and everlastinger — the kind of love that can endure spite, disgust and loathing; the kind of love that you feel, um ... mostly in your loins; and/or the kind of love where one person in the relationship is always making stupid jokes, even when you're really trying to be serious with them. That's what this extra-special list of songs is about.

I mean, what says romance more than Patrón on ice and late night sex? And isn't it every young girl's dream to someday marry a man who will take on a millionaire mistress? Besides that, what woman isn't charmed by a man who whispers sweet nothings like, "I'll pay your cab fare home. ... Just don't be here in the morning when I wake up"? What woman, indeed.

If you really want to make your sweetheart swoon this Valentine's Day, forget flowers, chocolates and, yes, even diamonds. Just throw these puppies on a disc for your shnigglefritz and I guarantee she'll keep you up all night long ... one way or another.

You could probably throw in Merilee Rush's "Angel In The Morning" in there, too. Most any Lynyrd Skynyrd song would also fit, and Harry Nillson has a couple entries that probably shouldn't be run in a family newspaper. But when it comes to love songs, nobody holds a candle to Brad and Janet. dammit.

I would throw in Jimmy Fallon's "Idiot Boyfriend," If only for the line "I've got a Swanson's chicken dinner in the freezer with your name on it."

Nice to see Wham from their sadly forgotten (and by far their best) first album. Young Guns would also work, somewhat, since it is the prelude to Everything She Wants. And I really hate to be picky, but crediting Stay With Me to just Rod the Mod and not Faces is a grave injustice to the greatest English Rock and Roll band of the early 70's. Again, Rod's (backed by Faces) amazing version of I'm Losing You would also work nicely on this list.

Agreed about "Stay With Me", it's off The Faces "A Nod Is As Good As A Wink To A Blind Horse". I wonder if the Ian McLaglan/Ronnie Wood "You're So Rude" off the same LP would work, too. 'Course, there's always the rock and roll love story that took place "Friday At The Hideout"...... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JoTTWL...

Thanks Gordon and Doug for the clarification. :) I hear a lot of DJs referring to it as Rod Stewart's song, but it's good to note that Faces is involved.
