Blog: Give It a Spin
February 17, 2010
Not to stir up any controversy here with the "dog people," but I stand proudly on the cat side.
I've loved cats since before the Internet. My brother and I took our little plastic wagon to the neighbors' house and kidnapped their litter of kittens — even though we already had three cats at home — because we wanted more cats (yes, Mom did make us return the kittens when we were caught). When I would walk to school, I would stop to pet all the cats on the way. I learned all their names, and thought myself a cat charmer because even the skittish ones would come to me. As a young child, I was even convinced that I was part cat and wanted to drink milk out of a bowl on the kitchen floor. I've tasted meaty cat food because I thought it smelled delicious (by the way, it is NOT!).
I've never lived a day in my life without at least one cat back at home. You could say that I am who I am today partially due to the people I grew up with, and partly because of my cats. Gracie, the calico cat we took home when I was just about 1-2, didn't die until I was in college, and you could say, in a way, she had a hand in raising me — just as I had in raising her.
My current cat is named Kitten. She will be 9 years old next month. We're pretty much best friends, even though she's a total weirdo. It's okay, I guess I'm a total weirdo, too ... or so she tells me.
Considering my love of the feline kind, it should be no surprise that I have accumulated tons and tons of songs about cats (or at least mentioning cats in their titles). Ahead is my latest list, in honor of the fabulous little furballs who have graced our lives and our hearts (caution: some swearing!):
1. "Star Me Kitten" by R.E.M. & William S. Burroughs
2. "Hello Kitty Cat" by Smashing Pumpkins
3. "Tommy the Cat" by Primus
4. "F*** You and Your Cat" by Goldfinger
5. "Cat People (Putting Out Fire)" by David Bowie
6. "The Lovecats" by the Cure
7. "Daisies, Cats and Spacemen" by Leila (featuring Roya Arab)
8. "When We Are Cats" by John Ralston
9. "The Siamese Cat Song" by Oliver Wallace and Peggy Lee
10. "Honky Cat" by Elton John
11. "Does Your Cat Have a Mustache?" by the Format
12. "Kitty" by the Presidents of the United States of America
13. "Cat With 2 Heads" by the Aquabats
14. "Stray Cat Strut" by the Stray Cats
15. "Fat Cat Keeps Getting Fatter" by Squirrel Nut Zippers
16. "The Cat Song" by Ray Stevens
17. "Three Cool Cats" by the Coasters
18. "Ev'rybody Wants to Be a Cat" by Steve Tyrell
19. "Bad Cat" by Roy Orbison
20. "Here Little Kitty" by the Peekers
21. "Kitten" by Nerd Parade
22. "Old Domestic Cat" by Simple Kid
23. "Meow Meow Lullaby" by Nada Surf
24. "Fatso's Theme AKA Play Him Off, Keyboard Cat" by Keyboard Cat
And in case you were wondering, no, of course I didn't forget this gem (though it didn't fit on the disc):

Thanks for The Cat Came Back. I hadn't seen it in years. It's no Porky in Wackyland, but it is still one of the all time greats.

Okay, last one...You've got all those great rockabilly influences "Go Cat Go" and don't forget all of those jive cats and cool kitties with Cab Calloway's "We the Cats Shall Hip Ya"

Nothing to add music-wise, but the thought of you guys kidnapping some kittens in a wagon cracked me up.

Don't forget two famous cat songs which are not available on recordings anywhere that I know of: Phoebe's imfamous "Smelly Cat" and Sheldon's song his mother sang when he was ill, and which he made Penny sing, "Soft kitty, warm kitty, little ball of fur. Happy kitty, warm kitty, Purr, purr, purr." Now, aren't you glad you're reading this? Of course, if you're not a fan of "Friends" reruns (6:30 evenings on KMYC Ch. 22 from our satellite) or Big Bang Theory (Monday nights at 9:30 on Ch.7), you may have missed these great tunes. My favorite is "Soft Kitty." Yes, I am a cat lover and have been since can't remember when. I used to sneak a barn kitten into the house and into my bed. My grandmother would find it and return it to its mother, as my grandparents had no house cats-just barn cats-to keep the rodent population down. They were all white (the cats, not the rodents).

I'm loving all these contributions. And especially pleased that no one's reprimanded me for omitting "Look What the Cat Dragged In." (The omission was very intentional.)
Also, yes, Joanne, I am familiar with those songs, and "Soft Kitty" is definitely my favorite of the two. Notably, this version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HuZzDD... Thanks for mentioning them!

Guy walks into the doctor's office and says "Doc, I've got this song running through my head and I can't get it out. Can you help me" - Doc says "What's the song" - "What's New Pussycat" said the man http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VBdSqk... - "It appears you have Tom Jones syndrome" said the Doc. - Showing concern, the patient asks, "do you run into this syndrome often" - "Well, It's Not Unusual....." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QrwO8b... You may groan now......

These stops are for the Land National's infliction. They grab drugs, illegals, smugglers, truckers with imperfect equipment, and an raiment of items andactivities that are dangerous, prejudicious and black. What's misconduct with this? You're an opposed anything, until you get harmed or taken by one of these items. Inactivity until your look entranceway crashes in, or you're raped, robbed, druged, beaten--then WHO YA GONNA Ring? That's ripe, the corresponding fill you've been flippin crap most!!! =============== Great Law Group
