Major gloom on 'Minor Love'

Blog: Give It a Spin

There could never be a better Lou Reed than Lou Reed, but if there were a silver medal, it would go to Adam Green.

Green's new album, "Minor Love," while somewhat repetitive, is a delightful set of less-than-three-minute-long morsels bearing a salient resemblance to those of the Velvet Underground's fearless leader (also with firm notes of Richard Hawley throughout).

At just a little more than a half-hour long, the album is a light listen without the commitment. The combination of viscid anti-folk and lounge-style island grooves keep the sound as unobtrusive as the duration.

A certain grimness pervades the song list, most evidently on "Breaking Locks," "Buddy Bradley" and "Boss Inside." But even when he implements some peppy Spanish licks on "Goblin" or the subtle surf/funk guitar on "Castles and Tassels," he still sings a little like Burt Bacharach on barbital.

I'd still be happy to swing in a hammock to "Give Them A Token" or take a seaside drive at twilight with "You Blacken My Stay."

Adam Green is performing at Chop Suey in Seattle at 9 p.m. April 2. Tickets are $12 in advance or $14 at the door.
