Timely and timeless: Love songs submitted by readers

Blog: Give It a Spin

Well, we asked and you answered.

Being restricted to only 80 minutes on a CD and only 28 years of exposure to centuries of music, my list of timeless love songs in the Valentine's issue of Thrive! didn't quite have it all.

Good thing I had four friendly voices to lend their input. Here are the timeless love songs those folks would have liked to see on the list:

■ Glenda Ritter of Wenatchee suggested "Unforgettable" by Nat King Cole and Natalie Cole, as well as "Have I Told You Lately That I Love You?" by Kenny Rogers.

■ Community blogger Doug Shirk referred me to his own Valentine's post of Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell selections, but went on to include some other great suggestions: "You Make Me Feel Brand New" and "Betcha By Golly Wow" by Russell Thompkins and the Stylistics; "Because" by the Dave Clark Five; "With This Ring (I Will Always Love You) by the Platters; "For Your Precious Love" by Jerry Butler; and "Baby It's You" by Gayle McCormick and Smith.

■ Gary and Lani Denniston of Wenatchee had a lot to add: "La Vie en Rose" by k.d. lang and Tony Bennett; "Non Dimenticar" by Nat King Cole; "Unforgettable" by Lou Rawls; "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me" by Mel Carter; "Can't Help Falling in Love" by Elvis Presley; "The Way You Look Tonight" by Michael Bublé; "Sway" by Ben E. King; "The Very Thought of You" by Rod Stewart; "Return to Me" by Dean Martin; "As Time Goes By" by Frank Sinatra; and "Quiet Nights" by Diana Krall.

■ Finally, my doting mother gave me some nice little treasures to round out the list: "At Last" by Etta James; "For You" by John Denver; and "True Companion" by Marc Cohn.

I was really happy to see "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me," as it was originally on my list before I had to cut it down to one CD. And I'm thankful my mom included "For You," as it's one I'd completely forgotten about, but wish I'd considered.

Now, obviously Valentine's day is over and everyone's moved on. But, as I always say, love should be something expressed year-round, so feel free to put all these songs to use no matter the day. That's when it means the most, anyway.

So help me, I'm going to turn in my certificate as the oldies guy. How the heck could I forget Mel Carter? On one of the PBS oldies specials he performed it, and sounded as good 40 years later as the 1965 original. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nLWirz... Then there's the happy half of the Carpender's catalogue (as opposed to the depressing half, which might make a decent blog in it's own right... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6inwzO....)

I think one of the most poignant love songs I've ever heard is "Misty" by Johnny Mathis, as well as "The 12th of Never."

I just had to add, "Love Changes Everything" by Andrew Lloyd Webber. That is my all time favorite.

This version of Wild is the Wind is based on Nina Simones' (which I couldn't get to upload). An arguement could be made that is Bowie's greatest vocal performance who's sense of hopelessness was fueled by his 10 gram a day coke habit. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GHTeXdG_F5o

But, this is my personal fave. An amazing arrangement complete with the goofy dance sans the lamp.
