Welcome to Wenatchee

Blog: Living Images

We are doing a story, an annual "Whatever Happened To?" story, about the current situation of subjects covered in the past.

Yesterday, I photographed the old sign that welcomed visitors to Wenatchee who entered the city from the north.

It had fallen into disrepair and with much controversy was removed and taken to the city's storage area at the old public works building on Worthen Street.

When the city moved its shops to Maple Street, the sign was taken to another storage lot in south Wenatchee near the Appleyard and that's where I caught up with it with the help of Dan Frazier with the city's public works dept.

It looks pretty sad, leaning against a fence on the north side of the lot near some old storage units with letters falling off it.

I went for the distant shot of the sign to put it in the perspective of where it is now, compared to where everyone is used to seeing it - in an honorable location standing tall for all to see.

Not sad at at all. It did its job and is not retired. What a nice sign that has replaced it. Kudos to those that made the new sign happen and to those that constructed the old sign in its time. Hope they don't waist any money on the old sign.
