Winning photographs of the defeated

Blog: Living Images

As a news photographer, I realized very quickly that some of the best photographs I make are never seen. Photo galleries on line have changed that to some degree but in print, photographs have to tell an accurate story and that means some of the best stuff is left out.

That is especially true in sports where if the local team wins, the picture should represent that with an upbeat photograph or timely play that contributes to the victory. The same is true if they lose - the image should portray the loss.

At the district wrestling meet on Saturday in Wenatchee, the Panthers captured second place behind Moses Lake but still, it is thought to be a very good showing for the team with three wrestlers getting the district titles for their weight class.

Even though my best pictures were of two of the losing wrestlers, photographs of two of the local boys will be on the cover of the sports page, leaving these two images gathering a viewing only on our web site.

Some great facial expressions...often tell more than the score.
