An isolated job

Blog: Living Images

Ever since I met Greg Rosinski with Mortenson Construction who is working on the hospital expansion and found out they would use a tower crane, I wanted to photograph what it was like to be the operator of the crane.

Yesterday I got my chance as reporter Dee Riggs volunteered to go with me and do the story as we climbed the 156-foot structure to photograph and interview the operator, Tony Wyatt.

It actually wasn't as terrifying as I thought it might be and the climb didn't take too much time but it was the warnings by Rosinski that got my heart going more than the reality of being on the crane. His pre-climb talk included words like swaying, twisting, and bending of the structure when it was operating.

We actually showed up at the end of his work day so all of that movement didn't happen - just a touch of sway when a breeze picked up.

I found out that there wasn't a way to get a photograph of Wyatt operating the crane because of the angles involved but I was able to show him climbing out of his small cab after his shift.

And here's the view from his metal and glass box where he operates the crane.

It actually looks higher from the ground than from the air.

Although reporter Riggs and I were pretty careful crawling around 156 feet in the air.

Don, Fantastic!

I've often wondered how the world would look from up in one of those things (and I am really delighted to learn without actually having had to venture up the ladders).

Thanks, Alex
