I had a great assignment over the weekend photographing the Fire in the Sky rocketry event near Mansfield. The weather was good (interesting clouds moving through with little wind) and the people eager to share what they were doing. At first I focused on one rocket through the process of getting it ready, firing, and collecting the remains. This simplifies the story, giving a common bond tying the pictures together.
I also had brought some radio remote gear with me and set up a camera with wide angle near a rocket.
I tested it out and it looked like everything was ready to go but when I moved back about 15 more yards for safety, I must have moved out of range of the radio control and I didn't get a thing.
I hung around for some other interesting photographs and got some odd landings.
And various other interesting images.
When I thought I had enough and was headed to my car, I suddenly thought of a space shuttle photograph that impressed me and went back to try the idea of a wide angle view of a rocket going off. I tried getting in position to show a person holding a rocket in the foreground. That was really a problem as the people kept moving just before launch. But I ended up with what I thought was my strongest image.

That took place at the old "Mansfield International Speedway" quarter midget track, didn't it?

Sounds about right - west of town on an old dirt track.
