Wide can be better

Blog: Living Images

Generally, I shoot sports action photographs as tight (close up) as I can in order to show the emotion/facial expressions of the competitor while still including any body language or other details that tell the story.

But occasionally, as in last Tuesday night's AppleSox game where the pitching was the story, I went with this image as secondary.

And this shot as the dominant photograph. To me, it is more than just another shot of a pitcher. I saw the shaft of light moving across the infield a couple of innings before and was blessed when the AppleSox hitters were put out and the pitcher returned to the mound just as the light hit the mound. I was also blessed that the pitcher drug his foot through the dirt to put a bit of dust in the air.
