A challenging part of my job is being in the right place at the right time. At The Wenatchee World and most good daily newspapers, the photography departments use a documentary style of photography to tell the stories of their communities. With that style comes some pretty strict rules.

I'd say the golden rule is that we won't manipulate the actions of our subjects before or during our photo shoots. We can't recreate something that has already happened just to get a photograph of it. So in order to come with interesting and story-telling photographs, we have to find out when our subjects are doing interesting things and be there to record.

A case in point: The local museum is having an art show of judges' works from a recycling theme. The photo request came through our department for Friday when a reception was to be held for the artists and their artwork. That would have gotten people next to their art work but I think it may have been a pretty static time to show what the exhibit is about. So with a couple of quick calls, I was able to be at the museum while people were actually hanging the works for the exhibit.

That put people actively doing something around the pieces giving me more chances at an interesting photograph beyond just looking at them.
