While I'm photographing any sporting event, I'm keeping a watchful eye on how the game is progressing. Who is making a difference? How are they doing it? Why is one team beating the other? These kinds of questions help me decide how to shoot the game and help me when I decide what photograph to publish in the newspaper. It also makes each game I photograph different and a challenge I need to stay focussed and fresh.

My first basketball game to photograph this season was Saturday as the Wenatchee girls went against Lake City. During warmups, a friend of mine mentioned that Wenatchee would be playing without their tallest player putting the team at a disadvantage against Lake City who had a pretty good player in Madi Farrell who stood at 6'2". That's something I kept in the back of my head during the game.

I thought it was one of the deciding factors especially in the second half as Lake City was able to feed her near the basket a few times for timely scores. Coming back to the office, my best two photographs were this shot of Katie Kansky laying out to get to a loose ball. (I like her intense expression).

And this shot of Lake City's tall girl getting a ball over Wenatchee's Maddi Hallberg.

If the size difference wasn't such a part of Lake City's win over the Panthers, I would have gone with the shot of Kansky but I felt the shot of Hallberg was a better story telling image.
