THE ART OF CARTOONING
First Thursday at the Library
March 4, 2010 1:00 - 2:00
Speaker: Dan McConnell
Sponsored by: The Friends of the Leavenworth Library
Refreshments will be served.
Here's a "Don't Miss" event that's sure to entertain you, so get it on your calendar now.
Local artist and cartoonist Dan McConnell will speak at First Thursday at the Library, which takes place March 4, 2010 from 1-2 p.m. at the Leavenworth, Washington Library and City Hall. Mr. McConnell, a man of many talents and varied experiences, offers this about himself:
"Native Washingtonian, CWU graduate, artist, song-writer, war protester, Senior Sober caricaturist, assistant curator, scientific illustrator, comic book writer, penciler and inker. Storyboard artist, graphic illustrator, art teacher, computer colorist, local political cartoonist, linoleum and woodblock printer, watercolorist, oil painter, grid maker, cartoon creator, Renaissance artist wannabe.
I was born in Chelan WA in 1948, moved to Quincy WA in 1955, graduated from QHS in 1966 then attended several colleges until I ended up at Central WA University with a BA degree in Broad Area Art and a provisional teaching certificate. I taught for a year at the Quincy Child Development Center then started doing art and that took me to Canada for a year with my wife, Ann. We were married in 1971.
We bought an orchard in 1974 and I started doing an orcharding comic strip, Apple Andy, in 1981. I did that for 20 years and since then I've leased out the orchard and started doing freelance art for whoever would like it and have begun a self-syndication in North Central WA of my political cartoons for the past year. I took a Scientific Illustration course from UW and was certified in 2004. Once a month I do a cartoon strip entitled Then & NOW for the Good Life magazine, published by Mike Cassidy."
Right now, some of Dan's cartoons are hanging in the Leavenworth Library, where you can preview his work before March 4, when we hope you will join us in looking into the mind of a cartoonist. How does he do this? Why does he do this? Could I become a cartoonist? Join us as we learn the answers to these and other questions,

I'm a Dan McConnell fan! Unfortunately, I have a prior commitment on March 4 and will not be able to attend this session.

This sounds really super. Hope that I can make it up to Leavenworth for this.
