About fifteen years ago a "Friends of the Library" group formed here in Leavenworth. This group is open to anyone interested in supporting our library.

Some of the past activities involved holding a book sale the weekend of Autumn Leaf Festival, decorating the children's reading area and changing the library display cabinet, scheduling artists to display their work throughout the library, buying a book for every third grader in Leavenworth, providing books for all the Christmas baskets, helping financially with the school libraries, supporting the First Thursday activities, and in general promoting reading and education in the library.

First Thursdays began in October, 2007; activities run October through May. October 2009 began the third year with a community goodbye party for Sharon Waters, our librarian for 25 years.

Past activities have included musician Carl Allen, who sang Woody Guthrie songs; a Christmas program at which Father Christmas came, parents brought cameras for pictures, and refreshments were offered; a Master Gardner presentation; Susan Butrielle who gave readings about women's suffrage; a Red Cross program on CPR; a talk by Paul Roberts, author of "The End of Food;" a Forest Service Bear program; information on starting and eating from a winter garden by Isaac Kaplan-Woolner and Scott Parsons; a presentation by NW author Earl Emerson, and an introduction to the new CEO of the Cascade Medical Center and Hospital..

Programs for the rest of this year which are in the works are:
February: Master Gardener, Square Foot Gardening
March: Artist
April: Poet
May: Singing cowboy
If you have an idea for a First Thursday program, or want to join or just help in some way, contact Arleen Guilfoyle: foyles@aol.com . She'd love to hear from you.

Check the poster at the library, or Community News in the Leavenworh Echo to see what's coming up. Events are also mentioned on KOHO. You might be surprised at what interesting and entertaining events for you and your children are happening here.
