Blog: Living Well

As I mentioned a few weeks ago, the west end of Front Street in Leavenworth is showing a decided growth spurt as wineries are opening in or relocating to this area. Other businesses, too, have opened or will be soon.

Dan Carr and Candy Mecham, owners of Visconti's Italian Restaurant, are creating a Leavenworth Sausage Garten next door to their Via Dolce gelato shop and Cured, the popular salami, sausage and cheese shop. Visconti's, a long time favorite among locals and tourists alike, offers full, white-table-cloth dining and service to suit any occasion. The Sausage Garten will be more casual, with outdoor seating and German style foods and beverages. Plans are to be open by Octoberfest 2011.

Image Across the street from this is the new location of Icicle River Clothing. Recently relocated from below 827 Front St. to a street front spot at 639 Front St., it is already experiencing an increase in traffic. Owners John and Jean Dawson feature unique items of clothing and gifts, both in this shop and in the Black Swan at 827 Front St.

Wasabi Sushi & Thai Cuisine, newly opened at 633 Front St. below the Bavarian Ritz Hotel, is a hidden gem just being discovered by food enthusiasts. Their foods pair well with the several Riesling and Gewurztraminer wines now being produced in the NCW area.

Although Ducks and Drakes, a favorite local hangout, moved from Front St,, it went just down the street and around the corner across from Blackbird Lodge, and patrons are enjoying being a few steps away from the hustle and bustle of the main street. The new outdoor eating area is also proving very attractive to those wanting to relax in a pleasant spot with good food and a choice of beverages.

What's next for The West End? We'll have to wait and see.
