Books for All Reasons

Blog: Living Well

I was just starting sixth grade when my family moved to the small Iowa town which became my home for the next ten years, and is still my "hometown." There I discovered the library.

I doubt that anyone was a more frequent visitor, especially in summer. Open year round from 2-6 p.m., six days a week, it was the center of my young life. Often I checked out a book at two and returned it before closing. Some books I reread more than once. I read "Lassie Come Home" five times. What wondrous worlds I found on the shelves in that small building! I had never heard of a bookstore.

Here in Leavenworth we have a library which I visit. We also have a bookstore, a delightful place which has books I can take home and keep, and read as often as like. Here I can sometimes meet the people who wrote the books. And I enjoy reading about the books and the authors in our bookstore's newsletters.

I don't know how our local Indie Bookstore, A Book for All Seasons, is able to create so consistently such a beautiful and wonderful newsletter. Sometimes I don't have time to read all the other newsletters I receive, and they get deleted, but not this one. It must be a privilege to work at the store, and be surrounded by all the books described in these newsletters, and the people who work there and who help make the store the attraction that it is.

Books: I love them. Oh, yes, I like the Internet, and I sometimes watch TV, although it isn't my favorite thing. But books? They are my friends, and I return to some of the same ones time after time. Like me, some of my favorites are showing signs of age, and wear and tear. But they remain faithful, offering me respite from the angst of daily life.

Now I am anticipating spending some time this month at A Book for All Seasons, checking out the new books coming out in May, and perhaps meeting the authors. I'm always ready to make new friends.

Joanne, I agree with you on so many points. I also love books and always have. Talking books, writing about books, and generally surrounding myself with books is an undying passion with me - almost an addiction, but I always say, I could have worse vices!

I had the pleasure of working at A Book for All Seasons for a year and a half (a couple of years ago). I even had the privilege of writing some of those fun newsletters! You are right, working at an independent bookstore (especially this one) when you are a book lover can be a joy!

Although I like the local booksellers, I think my three favorite ones are in Ellensburg. Jerrol's Book And Supply is a must stop for my wife and I, and the two used stores on Main Street (conveniently across the street from each other), Baily's Bibliomania and Brick Road Books are a joy to peruse.

It doesn't hurt that they're in the same block as Boogie Man Music (used insturments) and Old Skool Records, the best used record store in North Central Washington (Gawd, I miss Rodeo Records. A stop at The Palace for lunch, and I could spend a whole day on that one block.
