Who DID make it...The RARHoF inductees for 2010

Blog: Music For Old(er) Folks

May I have the envelope please. The inductees at the March 15, 2010 banquet will be:

ABBA, Genesis, Jimmy Cliff, The Hollies, The Stooges.

Got no real complaints with the list of inductees.....well, yes I do have a number of complaints, but I won't go into them now....but the better list is of those who will be inducted as "non-performers". Folks who will be presented the Ahmet Ertegun Award are:

Legendary agent, artist manager and record label owner David Geffin.....

....and a unique group of songwriters who helped make the "Brill Building" sound of the early and mid 60's. These writers wrote some of the most classic of classic 60's rock.

Husband and wife writing team of Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil ("Youve Lost That Lovin' Feeling", "On Broadway", "We Gotta Get Out Of This Place", "Kicks")....

.....the writing couple of Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwitch ("Da Doo Run Run", "Be My Baby", "River Deep Mountain High")......

....songwriter Mort Shuman, who along with partner Doc Pomus (inducted in 1992) wrote "This Magic Moment", "Save The Last Dance For Me", "Viva Las Vegas", Otis Blackwell ("Great Balls Of Fire", "All Shook Up", "Fever")....

....and Jesse Stone, one of the early rock pioneer songwriters whose credits include "Shake Rattle and Roll" and "Money Honey".

This is more the direction I wish the Hall would go (No Laura Nyro here?), but that's an argument for a different time. Kudos to the groups and writers who made it in.

Doug, I find your use of Peggy Lee's version of Fever to be rather intresting. As great as it is, I have always felt that it was another example of a sanitized white version of great R&B; music. For those who like to comparison shop, here is the original by Little Willie John. Also check out great versions by Elivs and The Jam

The Little Willie John version is great, but for some reason I've always thought of it as a jazz standard rather than an R&B; song. There's a list of artists that have done the song that is fasinating.... http://www.rintelen.ch/konzept_und_text/index.php?sparte=fever/db.php⟨=en .....to the point that I may have to dig out the version done by The Rationals.

I've always had a special interest in the British Invasion groups so I'm pleased to see the Hollies get in... just as I was to see the DC5 get in two years earlier. Doug, I agree with you on the non-performers list. It's great to see these '60s songwriters get their due!
