An old(er) guy's compilation tape
Blog: Music For Old(er) Folks
June 8, 2011
Last year around graduation time, while I was playing around with old summer songs (and ignoring "School's Out"), Abby Holmes celebrated her 10 year reunion with a "graduation mix tape". Last winter while cleaning out the garage, I ran into a box of reel tapes and have been systematically going through them, listing to what's on them, and going "Oh wow, I haven't heard that in years" or "gee, what a great segue".
Keep in mind back when I was in high school, we didn't really have portable music. Yes, we had radio, but the music delivery system of choice was records. Licorice pizzas. Two sizes, small (12" LP's) or personal (7" 45's). I didn't get my first reel to reel maching until 1969, and I've been making tapes ever since.
So, since we're looking at graduation time, I put on the earliest one I could find and copied down the song selection. This mess coresponds pretty much with my college graduation in December of 1971, aparently being made in very early 1972.
Couple of notes, first. These are stoner tapes. Beer and a bong stuff. Remember, this was 1972, dope was 10 bucks a lid and about as available as bottle of scotch. Second, I put a lot of work (and dope...and beer) into these things, and still do sans dope). My tastes have changed over the years, but the basic concept is still the same. In this shuffle mode world, some people still make tapes that flow. So, without further adeu....
Ready?
1) The Sigel-Schwall Band: Shake
2) Savage Grace: All Along The Watchtower
3) King Crimson: 21st Century Schitzoid Man
4) King Crimson: I Talk To The Wind
Don't ask me why I did that, the songs are one after another, and maybe I was too tired to select a new LP.
5) Blood, Sweat and Tears: I Can't Quit Her
6) Led Zepplin: I Can't Quit You Babe/How Many More Times
I know why I did this. These songs run together on the LP.
7) Yes: Yours Is No Disgrace

8) McDonald and Giles: Suite In C/Turnham Green/Here I Am
9) Humble Pie: Hot 'n' Nasty
And last but not least....
10) Rolling Stones: Under My Thumb
Don't know if it's great, do know it's old, though. And I know I enjoyed it as much when I played it last week as I did when I first put it together.

An old(er) guy's compilation tape
Early 80's I had a reel to reel with auto reverse and with the most tape at the lowest speed I had 13 hours of uninterrupted tunes. Took forever to make.

An old(er) guy's compilation tape
My first trip to Wenatchee to pick apples was in 1971. Mixed tapes were beyond my technical ability, but I had a Volkswagen and an early battery-powered cassette player and two tapes, "Gonna Take A Miracle," by Laura Nyro, and Miles Davis's "In a Silent Way." I played them both over and over for months until they exploded.
