Rice cooker does more

Earlier this month, I mentioned to my husband, Brian, how convenient rice cookers were. Lo and behold, on Christmas morning I unwrapped a very nice rice cooker from him.
I used it for the first time this morning, but I didn't make rice. I made oatmeal. Admittedly, oatmeal isn't hard to make. But it takes some watching and really, one shouldn't leave the kitchen when the stove is on. With a rice cooker, however, you can leave the kitchen and do all sorts of things — take a shower, dry hair, decide what to wear — all while the oatmeal is cooking (perfectly) for you.
I read the manual that came with the cooker, and it gave all sorts of recipes that can be cooked entirely in the cooker: jambalaya, fried rice, salmon. I don't know how far I'll go with it, but I've already moved past rice.
How about you? Do you have a rice cooker? Do you like it? What do you do with it?

I'm a dedicated fan of the rice cooker. Not only does it make cooking grains super-easy, but it makes reheating them easy, too. The rice cooker pot acts as cooker, storage container (in refrigerator) and warm-up pot. One terrific book full of easy recipes is "The Ultimate Rice Cooker Cookbook," by Beth Hensperger and Julie Kaufmann. Good recipes for pilafs, risottos and steamed custards.

Yes there is a ton of stuff you can do with them. Would not have made ith through college without one. You can make pretty much any boxed rice product in a cooker. Rice a Roni, Mexican rice, etc. Some come with a basket on the top allowing you to steam vegetables as the rice is cooking. Glad you are enjoying it!
