I just spent two days at an agtourism workshop focusing on the abundance of food and travel options NCW has to offer. The plan is to write a story about agricultural tourism in a month. While I was in attendance, though, I couldn't help but think of all of the fun and flavorful things to share with relatives when they come visit.
The workshop started with a Monday tour of local places that area already doing agricultural tourism. We started, of course, at Aplets & Cotlets and moved on to the Cashmere Cider Mill, where we got to see their cider-making facilities, taste cider and eat lunch. I couldn't quite believe I was getting paid to taste cider. Then, we got to see the Blue Star packing shed in Cashmere. We then moved on to La Toscana Winery for a tour of the Moyles' small vineyard, a pruning demonstration and wine tasting. The tour ended at Nicholson's fruit stand, where they offered samples of their dried fruit and discussed differences between organic and conventionally grown fruit. The tour was a good way to see the agtourism concept in action, and though, the season wasn't ideal, the weather certainly cooperated. It was probably 60 degrees midday Monday. I found it fun to be a tourist in the place where I'm from.
One of the things I enjoyed about the whole experience was being reminded of all of the cool things there are to taste and see in our area. I told myself I'd have to have a locally made cheese, fruit, wine and cider party sometime soon. And In the summer, I know where I'm taking my visitors.
