Breakfast to dessert

Earlier this week, I made a loaf of oat bread. It was a quick recipe, about than three hours from start to finish (including rise time). The oat-wheat loaf was thick and slightly sweet and perfect for toast. My husband, Brian, when he saw the loaf of bread suggested we make French toast with it. "Good idea," I thought. Though it had been a while since I made French toast, I remembered the method just fine.
As we got closer and closer to dinner time, the creative juices in my mind started running. I kind of wanted to make an apple topping. All of the sudden, inspiration hit. How about a bananas foster type of topping but with apples? Easy peasy.
I made the topping, then proceeded to make the French toast. After Brian, my mom and I sat down to eat our breakfast for dinner of French toast and eggs, we agreed: the French Toast with Apples Foster-ish was delicious, but maybe a bit more worthy of dessert standing ... especially with an accompaniment of ice cream. To me, the French toast was like a rich bread pudding. I'll be making it again, just for dessert instead of breakfast.
Apples Foster-ish French Toast
For the topping
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup heavy cream
1 apple, peeled, cored and sliced thinly
For the French toast
3 eggs, beaten
1/3 cup milk
1/4 cup sugar
Dash fresh nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1 tablespoon butter
4 slices thick bread
Dash powdered sugar (optional)
Heat brown sugar in a small saucepan over medium-high heat. Stir until brown sugar begins to melt. Slowly add the cream and continue heating and stirring until thick and creamy. Remove from heat, add apple slices and set aside.
Meanwhile, beat together eggs, milk, sugar, nutmeg and cinnamon. Heat a skillet over medium heat and add. Dip one slice of bread in egg mixture and place onto hot skillet. Cook for 3 minutes or so, or until toast has browned on the bottom. Flip and cook another 3 minutes or so until bottom is browned. Continue with remaining bread.
Top finished French toast with apple sauce and sprinkle with powdered sugar.
