I've been a bit ill lately and haven't exactly felt like cooking. Don't get me wrong, I've been itching to get into the kitchen, but simply haven't had the energy. Sigh.

This is a serious problem. I now have a backlog of recipes to make.

First, there was this a buttery, caramelized gorgeous cake from David Lebovitz's blog. I've been meaning to make it for two weeks. I even bought the fancy butter it requires (and ended up using a bunch of said fancy butter slathered on bread, not a bad use of fancy butter).

Then this French Onion Dip, which was originally planned as a Super Bowl party appetizer. My husband, Brian, didn't get to take it to the party. It never got made. (Though I did buy three onions and a tub of sour cream for the recipe, which fortunately are still good.)

I did manage to make mushroom-barley soup.

For the last two days I've been salivating over the prospect of making my own soft pretzels with gooey yellow cheese sauce. These classic — and highly unnutritious — comfort foods could only be better when made at home.

Last night I almost gave in to a craving for homemade chocolate chip cookies. Just the Toll House kind, something simple, quick to whip up. But still, I didn't have the energy. Instead, I made popcorn. It's a step.
