Artist Of The Week-The Pepper Pots
Blog: Punk On
December 3, 2011
While crusing through video's I came across "The Pepper Pots". When I first listened to them I thought I'd come across some obscured 60's "Supreme wanna be's" band. I read a few of the comments accompanying the video's with one reading "Just saw them in Blackpool today 9/30/2011" and after checking out their web page I saw that they released their latest album just this year. So apparently they're not old but "new" or somewhat so.
It's a bit difficult finding out much information on the band. They are a ten piece from Spain featuring three front female vocalists that alternate lead vocals, a three piece horn section with a baritone sax, guitar, bass, keys and drums. To me they have a very Supremes 60's sound right down to the tambourine usage.
I'm not real familiar with "The Supreme's" style of music from back in the day (help me here Doug) so I don't know if "The Pepper Pots" are a cover band or if they are doing original material. They have released four albums and an EP since 2005.
The first video is their latest "official video" "Wanna Blindly Trust In You" from their latest album "Train To Your Lover".
The next video "Time To Live" is an excellent example of how they sound live....pretty good I must say.
The last video is a casual live performance I believe done in a radio studio earlier this year it's "I Need To Hold Your Hand".
It looks like what was once old may be new again. Most of their previous concerts have been in Spain but they did do a hand full of shows here in the states back in March of 2009. Maybe they'll come back.

There is no doubt that these are originals, but I haven't hear this close to a Motown sound since Paul Weller's "Town Called Malace". (and maybe some Swing Out Sister) The intro to "Blindly Trust" is straight out of 'Nowhere to Run". According to their website they are from Spain. The fact that they are European doesn't suprise me. But, Spain does. I would have figured England or France.

I don't know about The Supremes....they were so Diana-centric, even in the early days.....but the girls sound a lot like Martha And The Vandellas or maybe The Velvelettes. I really like the drum kicks that start the songs, I half expected the first one to break into "Ain't To Proud To Beg". Listen closely and you'll hear some Pointer Sisters in their singing, too. Great stuff, thanks for posting.
