Sugar Sugar Sugar-The Early Show
Blog: Punk On
March 4, 2012
Last Friday night "Sugar Sugar Sugar" did a local double header. First was an all ages shows at Cascade High School in Leavenworth with a secondary show at The Outpost in Monitor. I caught the early show.
"Sugar Sugar Sugar" is a three piece out Of Bellingham. Formed in 2008, the band consists of Justin Verlanic on guitar and backing vocals, Andy Piper on bass and lead vocals with Lupe Flores on drums and also backing vocals. They have a 70's hard rock style with psychedelic overtones that took me back to my high school days and personally, I love hearing fuzz bass, you don't hear it much these days.
Unlike the photo to the right, Lupe's drumming enthusiasm doesn't really come through in a still so here's an example of Lupe.
They played some half a dozen songs during their short 25 minute set including the following:
They have released two albums one studio "Can't Get Enough" along with a live album "Live At Cap Hansens" and they continue to tour rather extensively.
Opening for Sugar Sugar Sugar was our own "Jip Sea Party". This was my first time to catch this band and in the words of Monty Python...."and now for something completely different." This band is just fun to watch and listen to. How can you not like a band with a masked drummer, an accordion, dancing girl with tambourine and some kind of mouth keyboard thingy. The sound takes me back to my Hungarian roots.
They too did a short 25 minute set but covered a lot of material including the following which was the opener for their set.
I feel the show was a success. Tho the sets were short, a lot of music was performed during the allotted times and both bands were just fun to watch. It was well worth the drive and hey, it was only $5.
