Without question, Tonasket girls basketball coach Stephanie Schertenleib and Liberty Bell girls' skipper Ash Court each had Tuesday's games circled on their schedules.
Schertenleib and the Tigers battled Okanogan, led by the ageless Gary Smith. Schertenleib played for Smith at Tonasket High School from 2000-2004, helping the Tigers to the state championship game as a senior.
Court and the Mountain Lions tangled with Oroville, led by Mike Bourn. Bourn coached Liberty Bell for 17 years before his close friend Court took over two seasons ago.
It was a weird night on both sides.
Smith said he talked a little smack to his young protege before Okanogan whomped the young Tigers, 71-22.
"I said it was going to be like a trip to the dentist," he said. "It was going to hurt a little, but I would give them a shot of novocaine to help with the pain."
Smith pulled his starters in the fourth quarter to avoid further embarrassment to his former player.
Court was victorious over his former boss as the Lions took down Bourn and the Hornets 54-27.
"I was his assistant for five years, I've been going to his practices for 10 years, we've been hunting together and I was in his wedding," Court said of his relationship with Bourn.
"It was pretty weird."
