Big day for Eastmont sophomore

As I was taking the swimming boxscore of the Wildcats' 128-54 thrashing of West Valley from coach April Cheadle on Tuesday, I kept hearing the name of Derek Savage coming up. The sophomore won both the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke, plus was part of the winning 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay teams.
Apparently it was a pretty big deal for Savage.
Cheadle said Savage's only goal last season was to win a single event at any meet. He never did, so his stellar performance on Tuesday was pretty neat for her to see.
"I just loved the look on his face after he won the backstroke," Cheadle said. "He was shocked that he got that time (1:01.92). ... What a difference from last year to this year."
In other Eastmont boys swimming news, the 'Cats already have a state qualifier. Diver Billy Tuthill eclipsed the state-qualifying mark of 300 points in an 11-dive meet last Saturday. Cheadle mentioned that it's pretty rare for a diver to have all 11 dives down enough to qualify for state in the first meet of the year.
