Bad news for Eastmont boys basketball fans: Darren Spaeth, the team's second best scorer and one its few reliable post players, suffered a severe dislocated left pinkie in practice Thursday. The injury will likely hold him out three games, including Friday's important meeting with defending league champ Eisenhower.
"He's a mess," Eastmont coach Mike Waters said of Spaeth. "The ball must have got deflected and his pinkie was stuck out. It was ugly. I’ve seen some pretty good injuries, but this was about the worst dislocation I’ve seen. It chipped the bone."
Kevin Fagg, a 6-foot-2 freshman who scored 17 points in his first JV appearance Tuesday against Davis, will make his varsity debut in Spaeth's place in the starting lineup Friday.
"(Fagg) is going right into the fire," Waters said.
Spaeth isn't the only Wildcat who's banged up. Thomas Higuchi, his partner in the post, is dealing with a bruised tailbone, while reserve forward Alonza Urena had a tooth shoved through his bottom lip and reserve guard Bryan Washington suffered a deep cut on his hand in Thursday's rough-and-tumble practice.
