Vin de Pays Wal-Mart style
Blog: Winemaker's Journal
January 28, 2010
Here's a fun, if unreliable, bit of wine news that's been circulating the Web lately:
Wal-mart wine
Wal-Mart announced that, sometime in 2010, it will begin offering customers a new discount item - Wal-Martâ„¢s own brand of wine. The world's largest retail chain is teaming up with Ernest & Julio Gallo Winery of California to produce the spirits at an affordable price, in the $2 - $5 range. Wine connoisseurs may not be inclined to put a bottle of Walmart brand into their shopping carts, but "there is a market for inexpensive wine," said Kathy Micken, professor of marketing at the University of Arkansas .
But the right name is important. Customer surveys were conducted to determine the most attractive name for the Walmart wine brand.
The top surveyed names in order of popularity were:
- Chateau Traileur Parc
- White Trashfindel
- Big Red Gulp
- World Championship Riesling
- NASCARbernet
- Chef Boyardeaux
- Peanut Noir
- I Can't Believe it's not Vinegar
- Grape Expectations
- Nasti Spumante
The beauty of Walmart wine is that it can be served with either white meat (Possum) or red meat (Squirrel).

Vin de Pays Wal-Mart style
Variations of this (names of wines) have gone around the Net a few times. You know all these silly emails have to have originated somewhere, from someone. I wonder who sits around thinking them all up.

Some people have too much time on their hands, I guess. I have nothing against inexpensive wine if it's good and I've seen some actual wine names that rival these for silliness.

Big Red Gulp...That may already be taken.
My personal favorite is the Chateau TP...I could buy that in the 2 to $5.00 range.
Thanks for the news: I'll keep watching the shelves.
