The expectations for Colorado under Deion Sanders have ranged from another sub .500 season for the Buffs all the way to Colorado winning a championship.
While both of those are likely on the extreme side and a realistic expectation can be found somewhere in the middle, it is no secret that Deion Sanders' presence has completely changed the outlook of the program. Consistently viewed as an afterthought in their own conference, Colorado has now become transcendent and will be the lone program to have their spring game televised by ESPN, while also having all sorts of four and five-stars in attendance to watch.Â
However, in his recent article breaking down which teams across college football are overhyped or underhyped, 247Sports' Will Backus not only called Colorado overhyped but absolutely ripped the Buffs apart saying:
Let’s pump the brakes a little bit here. Deion Sanders was a fantastic hire, and he is already getting the attention of some elite talent. But he is also inheriting a complete mess. Discounting the COVID-19 year, Colorado has just one winning season since joining the Pac-12 over a decade ago. While Sanders’ 25-prospect transfer class could plug some holes immediately, Colorado still has probably the worst roster in the whole conference. Yet there are some major pundits that have included the Buffaloes in their way-too-early top-25 predictions. As things stand, Colorado is little more than a paper tiger at this point. With his charisma and ability to recruit, Sanders has all the tools to rebuild Colorado, but making a bowl in Year 1 would be overachieving.
Some extremely strong criticism for Coach Prime and the Buffs considering "the worst roster in the whole conference" is made up of a No.1 transfer class and a top-25 recruiting class. USC used the same exact method last season, while having a worse recruiting class than what Colorado put together and they made a New Year's Six Bowl Game. It's not to say that the Buffs are on that trajectory, but it wouldn't be surprising if the team filled with elite talent does well. It seems as if Backus is referencing Fox Sports' RJ Young who ranked the Buffs No. 20 in his pre-spring top-25, but even in saying they aren't a top-25, it still comes off as he is expecting a horrendous year.
When it comes down to it, we will just have to wait and see how the Buffs do, but we do know has their doubts.
