Despite pledging their allegiance to the Pac-12, there are now reports indicating that Colorado could in fact bolt for their former conference, the Big 12.
In early April, Colorado Athletic DirectorRick George refuted a post on Twitter that claimed that the Buffs were headed to the Big 12 in a week from the tweet. Not only did George's tweet mark the first time someone from Colorado had refuted the Big 12 rumors, but it also made Colorado the fourth and final school of the "four corner" schools consisting of Arizona, Arizona State, AND Utah to pledge their allegiance in some way to the Pac-12.
While April and Colorado's commitment to the Pac-12 feels like a year ago, there are now reports indicating that they may in fact be Big 12 bound, again. According to Barry Tramel of the Oklahoman, Colorado is willing to join the Big 12 "soon".
The report comes in the same week as Washington State's president called for spending freezes due to Pac-12's financial issues, and also comes after it was reported by the New York Post that ESPN and the Pac-12 are having “no substantive talks” about reaching a new television contract, as the Pac-12's is set to expire in summer 2024.
If Colorado were in fact to be the first of the remaining 10 programs to jump ship from what is left of the Pac-12, it could signal the end of the conference as reports have linked Washington and Oregon to the Big Ten as well.
The Pac-12 has long been in the works of assembling a media rights deal, and planning to expand once that is completed. Whether they will get the chance, remains to be seen.
