Winners of the 2019 Write on the River Writers Competition have been chosen by a team of local judges. In this 12th-annual competition, open to anyone in Washington, dozens of excellent short stories and essays vied for $1,200 in cash awards. All these writers are in excellent company — you can learn more about them and read their winning entries at writeontheriver.org.

Non-fiction

First: “Lessons of The Light,” Sande Langager, Wenatchee

Second: “Physician, Heal Thyself,” John Gallanis, East Wenatchee

Third: “Moving,” Susan Gillin, Wenatchee

Fiction

First: “Fictions and Lies,” Tim Adams, Moses Lake

Second: “Raven,” SaDonna Heathman, Hartline

Third: “The Buskers,” Rose Weagant, Twisp

Thanks to every person who sent an entry; it’s a great way to stretch your skills and try out your writing voice. Three of these writers are previous competition winners — SaDonna Heathman, John Gallanis and Susan Gillin. If you’re inspired — again or for the first time — to submit your original writing to the 2019 Writers Competition, look for detailed criteria and an entry form next December.

The six winners will be invited to read their works at the next Four Minutes of Fame. The public event will be held at the Wenatchee Valley Museum & Cultural Center from 6:30 to 9 p.m. May 15.
