LEAVENWORTH — Abby Phelps felt sick during the Chelan volleyball team’s run to the 1A state volleyball championship match in early November, but she played anyway. Not wanting to risk sitting out crucial matches, she put off going to a doctor as long as she could, but eventually, after a series of tests, she was diagnosed with a mononucleosis-like virus.
Instead of immediately joining the Goats’ girls basketball team in its quest for a third straight state tournament berth, Phelps could barely get out of bed. She had no energy. She lost 15 pounds. She didn’t attend a full day of school for three weeks. She desperately wanted to be on the court with her teammates, but at that point, the absolute last thing that Phelps could do was any type of physical activity.
