WENATCHEE — Though normally prohibited, ATVs will be on Saddle Rock next week.
GeoEngineers will use them for surveying as part of a project involving removing waste rock piles.
The city of Wenatchee finalized the purchase of 325 acres in 2011 and dedicated it as Saddle Rock. Before that, the state Department of Natural Resources owned the property and received small mining lease payments from 1891 to 1989.
Environmental assessments indicated waste rock sites and arsenic concentrations exceeding state Model Toxics Control Act standards. There are 11 waste rock piles and they will be removed in two phases.
