WENATCHEE — Police believe a 36-year-old man stole another man’s computer tablet and a bag of possessions and then tried to hit him with a stick.

Gary Elton Sargent Jr. was arrested on suspicion of second-degree assault, second-degree robbery and third-degree theft.

The alleged victim told officers that Sargent confronted him about 10 a.m. Monday at Centennial Park on the 100 block of South Wenatchee Avenue and took his Samsung tablet and the bag, according to a probable cause affidavit filed in Chelan County Superior Court.

The 25-year-old Wenatchee man attempted to get his possessions back from Sargent, but Sargent swung a large wooden stick with a metal hook at him, and the alleged victim blocked it with a skateboard, breaking the stick in half, the affidavit said.

Sargent reportedly tried to stab the 25-year-old with the sharp end of the stick. Police detained Sargent nearby and recovered the tablet, wallet and clothes. Total value of the items was at least $260.

Sargent was being held Monday at the Chelan County Regional Justice Center.
