WENATCHEE — A retired Chelan elementary school teacher pleaded not guilty to accusations that he molested a former student.
Authorities say Jack Leeroy Rutter fondled a young boy’s genitals during physical education classes almost a decade ago while the boy attended Morgen Owings Elementary School.
The abuse allegedly occurred about once a week from when the boy was in kindergarten to early second grade, according to a probable cause affidavit filed May 2 in Chelan County Superior Court.
Rutter, 69, was arraigned Wednesday in Superior Court. He pleaded not guilty to one count of first-degree child molestation. Trial is set for Aug. 4.
He was arrested May 1 and then released from custody May 2 after posting $25,000 bail.
Rutter was a teacher with the Lake Chelan School District from 1980 to 2014. Superintendent Barry DePaoli told The Wenatchee World it was the first time he’d heard accusations of this sort made against Rutter.
The alleged victim, now 15, came forward with the accusations in March. He told detectives the abuse took place in a room at a community gym where the boy was asked by Rutter to retrieve balls for class, the affidavit said.
