Students from Valley Academy of Learning try to pull ahead of another canoe of their peers on the Columbia River Thursday.

WENATCHEE — The Wenatchee Row and Paddle Club provided two David Thompson canoes and navigation skills as they helped 22 third- through fifth-graders learn about paddling on the river.

This is the fourth year that the Valley Academy of Learning has participated in one of three programs the Wenatchee Valley Museum & Cultural Center offers — this one called Early Explorers.

Beyond canoeing, students worked with maps and orientation, and bird identification from the Audubon Society at Confluence State Park before going to the museum for more.

What they learned on Thursday tied into their class studies on Washington State history, said instructor Julie Banken.
