WENATCHEE — The city of Wenatchee will host an opening ceremony next week for the newly renovated Lincoln Park. But some people have already been using the park.
“People have been disregarding the closure and going on the grass even while it was being sprayed,” said David Erickson, parks, recreational and cultural services director.
Erickson said people have taken away signs that state the park is closed and to stay off the grass.
Around 2 a.m. Thursday the park was vandalized when someone drove through the grass with a car, Erickson said.
“That’s already bad enough,” he said.
But because the grass hasn’t been allowed to properly grow, the nets for the new soccer field won’t be placed at the park until the end of July, Erickson said.
Another delay that the renovation project is experiencing is in a few permits for a new splash pad.
The splash pad has been installed but the city is waiting for final approvals from the state Department of Health to be operational, Erickson said.
Signs to stay off the grass will still remain when the park opens, Erickson said.
In the meantime, Erickson asks the public to stay off the grass to allow it to grow.
The reopening ceremony will begin at 4 p.m. todayMay 23.
