LEAVENWORTH — Cougar Creek Fire-related evacuation in the Entiat area were downgraded Friday as fire crews, wind and weather reduced the threat to the communities east of the fire.
Evacuation notices were lifted on Entiat River Road below mile marker 16.5. The area past mile marker 16.5 is now at a Level 1 evacuation notice — be aware — rather than the previous Level 2 evacuation advising homeowners to be ready to leave.
Chelan County Emergency Management also notes the 25 mph speed restriction on the road has been rescinded and the Red Cross Shelter in Entiat will be shutting down.
The fire patrols will continue in the area, but the Entiat Fire Camp is expected to continue to shrink. Personnel will shift to the camp at the Leavenworth Fish Hatchery, according to fire officials, as the focus shifts to the west side of the fire above Fish Lake, Plain and Chiwawa.
The Cougar Creek Fire, burning between Ardenvoir and the Plain Valley, on Saturday was listed at 41,324 acres, with 40 percent containment and 946 personnel working the blaze.
Level 2 evacuation notices remain on the Chiwawa Loop Road from Plain to the intersection of Chiwawa River Road, which includes Chiwawa River Pines, Shugart Flats and all the roads that intersect Chiwawa Loop Road. Plain remains at Level 1.
A weather front expected to roll in Saturday, brings a chance for rain Sunday that will help reduce fire activity and give fire crews a chance to extend the containment lines and assess structures in Chiwawa Pines, Shugart Flats and Plain. The smoke continues to come and go with the wind.
